Inserted within the serene Queenstown landscape, Central Otago House is an understated sculpture grounded by mass, light and pure space. The home celebrates the atmosphere of the surrounding mountainscape by way of a calm, quiet existence. Entry to the home is defined by an alluring composition of light and shadow, and a warm and tactile material palette - natural timber, stone and metal - curates intentional moments of interaction with the building.
Within, spaces of retreat are balanced with transparent edges, a sense of protection coexists with visual connections to the landscape. A courtyard at the centre of the house introduces light into the plan and offers glimpses to a restrained gardenscape designed to be peaceful and reflective. Such moments of lightness, paired with heavy concrete volumes, create a home of permanence and solidity, as if to have been extruded straight from the earth.
