WANAKA HOUSE

Set within a wide alpine valley, this residence is conceived as a permanent anchor in a landscape of shifting seasons. Heavy concrete walls embed the form into the slope, recalling the simple, enduring construction of early Central Otago farm buildings. Above, an elegant corrugated roof stretches with quiet assurance, its profile punctuated by two solid chimneys that signal both function and presence.
Entry is through a solid timber door, opening to a framed view of Mt Maude — a moment of orientation and pause. Within, the atmosphere shifts: interiors of dark timber, raw concrete and stainless steel create a sense of weight and permanence, balanced by generous volumes that orient outward to sun and view. Spaces move between intimacy and openness, retreat and release.
The result is a home of solidity and refuge, equally attuned to winter’s stillness and summer’s expansiveness, a lasting place for gathering and renewal.
